Case Study: Life-Saving Workplace Safety

West Fraser, a lumber mill in Joanna, South Carolina, maintains a strong commitment to workplace safety. At this facility, safety is not just a compliance requirement—it is embedded in the organizational culture. Employees are trained regularly in emergency response procedures, including first aid and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

During a routine workday, an employee named Marty suddenly collapsed due to a cardiac event. Cardiac emergencies in industrial environments are particularly critical because response time directly impacts survival chances. Immediate intervention is essential to prevent fatal outcomes.

The situation escalated quickly, but the preparedness of West Fraser’s workforce proved crucial where co-workers immediately identified that Marty was experiencing a serious medical emergency. Three employees who had received first aid and CPR training from GPS Jobs took immediate action. The employees worked quickly together to use an on-site Automated External Defibrillator (AED) until further help was available.

Marty survived the cardiac event that potentially could have ended in a fatal incident. This outcome highlights the critical importance of early First Aid and CPR training in the workplace.
